SALT LAKE CITY (Feb. 26, 2025) – The Organizing Committee for the 2034 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games Wednesday (Feb. 26) named a Steering Committee to provide advisory direction to the Organizing Committee Board. The Steering Committee includes a wide range of athletes along with community, sport, and business leaders, as well as state and local elected officials.

While the board holds governance and fiduciary responsibility for the organizing committee, the Steering Committee brings together a wide range of expertise and perspectives from community, sport, and business leaders, as well as state and local elected officials, and a broad group of athletes. It serves in an advisory capacity to the Organizing Committee Board.

“The Steering Committee will play a vital role in the years leading up to 2034,” said Executive Chair and President Fraser Bullock. “It allows us to bring in a broad range of expertise and perspectives across many topics that will be paramount to our success.”

The organizing committee will also empanel a series of committees to provide unique expertise and knowledge in specified areas. Four-time Olympic speed skater Catherine Raney Norman, who served as board chair for the bid committee, will head the Athletes’ Commission. The commission will be comprised of Olympic and Paralympic athletes. It will provide guidance to the board to help ensure a positive athlete experience in 2034, as well as help build a strong legacy of sport across Utah and the nation. Raney Norman expects to name athletes to the commission in the near future.

Ten athletes were named to the Steering Committee, including both summer and winter medalists – all with Utah ties. Among the athletes are two-time Olympic champion Ted Ligety, 2022 figure skating gold medalist Nathan Chen, 13-time Paralympic medalist Chris Waddell, 2024 Olympic mountain biking silver medalist Haley Batten, 2024 Olympic steeplechase silver medalist Kenneth Rooks, and 2002 Paralympic cross country champion Tanja Kari.

The Host Communities Committee will bring together leadership from each of the host venue communities. It will be chaired by Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall, with Park City Mayor Nann Worel serving as vice chair. The two mayors served similar roles during the bid phase. The committee will bring leaders together to share best practices, and to provide advisory counsel to the board.

The Sport and Venues Committee will bring together leaders from each of the proposed Games venues, along with Utah and national sport leaders. Utah Olympic Legacy Foundation President and CEO Colin Hilton will chair. The committee will provide a platform for venue and sport leaders to network together through best practices so that all venues are aligned.

The Technology and Innovation Committee will bring both expertise and a deep network of contacts to support the organizing committee over the next decade. It will be led by technology visionary and Utah native Matthew Prince. He is the co-founder of Cloudflare, a highly-respected global web performance and security company, where he serves as CEO.

Bullock indicated that the chairs of each will now begin populating their committees. He also anticipates that additional committees will be empaneled over time to address management and board needs.

The Organizing Committee Board and Steering Committee will hold their first meeting on Thursday, February 27. The additional committees will hold meetings after the chairs have populated their members.
